Savannah Scenes

Spring has arrived in Savannah and the azaleas are blooming!  As a photographer, I couldn’t think of a more inspiring city to live in, no matter the season.  I have always enjoyed capturing photos around the city throughout my daily travels, and have decided to share those images and make them available on my website.  My lovely wife and I spent an afternoon updating  and  I added a new gallery of “Savannah Scenes” and will be updating it as I continue to document the many beautiful sites in and around the Savannah area.  Of course, if anyone has any special requests about sites or locales they would like to see, please leave suggestions in the comments section.  I hope you enjoy my photos of Savannah and Tybee as much as I enjoy capturing them!

Allyson and Parker

As a photographer, I can’t help but think that Savannah has to be one of the best cities in which to live and work.  I especially enjoy exploring Savannah’s historic beauty and charm with couples during engagement photo sessions.  The joy is even greater when I am able to share my view of Savannah with a couple new to the area.  While Allyson and Parker have not spent much time in Savannah, they are both excited about moving to the area later this year, and I am really excited about photographing their upcoming wedding in Athens.  I look forward to sharing in their special day, capturing for them, many lasting memories in their new life together.

Photography Tips From a Baby

After 20 years of experience as a photographer, I find myself still eager to learn.  However, I never thought I would be able to learn anything from an 8-week-old baby.  A photo session this past weekend taught me quite a bit about myself and my photography skills.  There was a time when I would have never thought of myself taking photos of a baby, but I have learned to no longer say “no, never” about any photo opportunity.

As I became a photojournalist, there was a time I only wanted to photograph what I considered “important” or “meaningful” subjects.  At one time early in my career, I didn’t want to shoot sports, mostly because I didn’t know very much about sports other than basketball.  After many years of covering local sports, I have become a pretty good sports photographer.  I am happy to say the same is true with wedding photography.  I think it is pretty common for professionals to avoid subjects because they are worried that they may not be as comfortable or knowledgeable about it.  I felt that way about weddings for a long time, but my love for photography and technical background allowed me to begin photographing them, and I found I had been missing out on something I really enjoy doing.

I have not had many opportunities over the years to photograph babies, so when my wife asked me if I would take photos of her high school friend’s 8-week-old daughter, I was a bit hesitant.  After some research, I decided I was ready to give it a try.  We spent an afternoon taking lots of pictures of the couple and their baby girl.  While it didn’t go exactly as I had thought, it went better than I could have imagined.  It is often difficult photographing subjects for the very first time, but with patience and flexibility I was able to capture some images that I was genuinely happy with.  For a photographer that is as hard on himself as I am “happy” is pretty good.

So what did I learn from a baby?  Just because I have never photographed a certain subject is no excuse for not taking the leap and giving it a try.  Photographing things for the first time is stressful, but it is also extremely rewarding because how else would I have found out what I love to photograph?
